Controversy Over Modi Documentary Continues

Tax officials conduct survey on BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai over allegations of international taxation and transfer pricing irregularities. Around 20 officials searched the Delhi office and seized documents and devices. BBC's production unit in Mumbai was also searched. Officials assert that this was a survey and not a search and that the phones would be returned. The survey was conducted in connection with the controversial documentary series on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and allegations linked to the 2002 Gujarat riots

The tax officials reportedly requested details of the balance sheet and accounts from BBC's finance department. The offices will remain sealed for the duration of the survey and employees have been asked not to share details with anyone. The two-part series titled "India: The Modi Question" by BBC was recently taken down from public platforms, and on January 21, the Centre directed blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the documentary, using emergency powers under the Information Technology Rules, 2021.
