Communal Clashes in Northern Haryana, India: 5 Fatalities Reported in Tense Situation between Hindus and Muslims
In a troubling incident, violent communal clashes erupted in northern Haryana state, India, leading to the loss of lives and destruction of property. To curb the escalating tensions, authorities swiftly imposed a curfew and suspended internet services, while thousands of paramilitary forces were deployed to the affected regions, including Gurugram, a city located just outside the capital, New Delhi.
The tragic events unfolded on a Monday afternoon in Haryana's Nuh district when members of a Hindu nationalist group engaged in a religious procession. A confrontation between Hindus and Muslims quickly spiraled out of control, leaving two police officers and two civilians dead. The ensuing chaos saw over 20 police officers injured and several cars set ablaze.
The situation took a grim turn when the violence spilled over into Gurugram, situated about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from New Delhi. Mobs attacked and set fire to a mosque, and a Muslim cleric lost his life in the late hours of the night. Some attackers were subsequently apprehended by the authorities.
In the wake of the unrest, authorities took precautionary measures by ordering the closure of schools and colleges. On the following day, baton-wielding police patrolled the debris-laden streets of Nuh, where fear-stricken residents remained indoors, reflecting the tense atmosphere gripping the region.
The situation has alarmed many residents, with some families choosing to abandon their homes in the violence-stricken neighborhoods out of fear for their safety. The Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, condemned the violence in a social media post, vowing to take strict action against those responsible. The state's home minister, Anil Vij, raised concerns about the incident being "engineered" and announced a thorough police investigation into the clashes.
